Essay / The Dead Poets Society - 753
The Dead Poets Society is a film about how a teacher, John Keating, teaches his students to Carpe Diem or "seize the day." Most of Mr. Keating's students do something different to start enjoying the day. Neil Perry, Charlie Dalton and Knox Overstreet are among Mr. Keating's students who support Carpe Diem. Neil Perry comes from a very controlling family. If Neil's grades fall below the A average, he will be punished by his father. Neil loves acting and tried to act in a play once, but his overbearing father doesn't want Neil to do anything that might ruin his grades. After meeting Mr. Keating, Neil learns that he must start taking advantage of the opportunity, so he once again begins saving Mr. Keating's old club, the Dead Poets Society. Then, Neil involves all his friends in creating the old club, and now, with the confidence gained from creating the club, he decides to go further when he goes against his father's demands and auditions for the play at a school near his own. When Neil gets the lead role, he makes two fake letters from the director and his father, in order to be able to participate in the play. Mr. Perry, Neil Perry's father, learns from a friend at a dinner that his son is taking part in a play, but when he finds his son, he tells him that he is forbidden from attending the show, because he went behind his back. Mr. Keating is met by Neil just after he has his conversation with his father, and he tells him how he feels about his father. John Keating tells Neil to talk to his father and explain why he wants to be in the play. Since Neil's father won't let Neil into the room, Neil ages behind his back to play his part in the performance, and when he does, he receives a standing ovation.Cha...... middle of paper. .... Her boyfriend beats Knox Overstreet, and she tells Knox to leave while she calms her boyfriend down. Later in the school year, Knox goes to Chris's school to read him poetry he composed, and she comes to his school to talk to him. She starts yelling at Knox and tells him for stopping her boyfriend, but Knox asked Chris to go to the play that night and give him a chance. While, during the play, Knox holds out his hand, Chris doesn't take it away, leading the audience to wonder if he got the girl? Almost every student in Mr. Keating's class learns what it means to seize the day. Even though Mr. Keating is kicked out of school because of a lie, he left the students with the knowledge that there is more to life than being tidy. “Seize the day” is exactly what Charlie Dalton, Neil Perry and Knox Overstreet learned from their experience with Mr. Keating..
