The effects of violence in video games and mainstream mediaToday, in a society heavily dominated by the media, violence in these media has become a problem because it is neglected. Violence has become so common in mainstream media that when the average American sees it on television, it is viewed as mere entertainment and does not arouse any tension. What most people don't know is the effect that media violence can have on viewers. Video games in particular are widespread around the world and have become very popular among American youth. Violence in video games can have unhealthy and potentially dangerous effects on young children and adolescents who spend hours a day tapping on a joystick with various buttons. However, the effects of media on behavior are linked to the socialist model and the role-taking opportunities it provides, and are not just linked to greater exposure to violent media. Violence in video games leads to more aggressive behavior in young children and adolescents. “New research suggests that teens who play violent video games are more likely to cheat, be more aggressive, and have less self-control.” (“Video games and aggression”, Web). This is due to the game's violent content and moral disengagement which results in less restraint. Therefore, research shows that video games can cause an increase in aggressive behavior. Video games have an effect on extracurricular activities. “Research shows that adolescents who tend to play video games for long periods of time are more aggressive, have declining academic performance, may get into fights, etc. » (“Effect of video and extracurricular games”, Web). In contrast, experiencing peer violence or simply watching violent action movies on television may well have the same effect on behavior as violent content in video games. The worlds of mainstream media and video games are expanding every day. This isn't a bad thing, people should just be more critical of what they see and potentially educate themselves. Violence has become so common in mainstream media and video games that when the average person watches it on television, it is overlooked because not everyone is aware of the potential dangers that media and games can weigh on us. So the next time you're gaming or just watching TV on your living room couch, be more critical and stop and analyze what you're watching..
