  • Essay / A deontological ethical system - 828

(Pollock, J. 2014. P.33). Examining this case using the ethics system can help examine the agent's duty. The duty of the driver is to be aware and vigilant at all times on the road, but if he does not fulfill these duties, he is not respecting this ethical system. Additionally, the officer's duty is to protect and serve, which is a specific duty assigned to them when they take the oath of office. Taking this oath to protect and serve is a moral duty, because it is a moral obligation to uphold the oath they took. Job duties are obligations one has toward a certain job or career, but moral duties are obligations related to right or wrong that are not legally bound. In this situation, the officer is confronted with both the duties of his position and moral duties. If we completely forget that the driver is someone important, the police officer would have no problem in fining the irresponsible person. One way to evaluate ethical actions is the categorical imperative. The categorical imperative in ethics is a way of evaluating moral actions and then making moral judgments. Thus, with a clear and impartial state of mind, the deontological system supports the punishment of fining the guilty party. The last ethical system that can be used to inspect the case is utilitarianism.
