In terms of socializing with Americans via English, two things need to be considered. First, how comfortable and able you are speaking English with others. Second, how brave and confident are you in speaking English? Most international students, myself included, have been studying English from a relatively young age, but due to the environment, we are more familiar and able to write in English than to speak directly to others via that language. With hard work and practice, international students can write consecutive paragraphs or even polished essays, but speaking in perfect English is much more difficult. First, conversation requires international students to generate instant responses to others via a second language. So, a lot of practice and English thinking is necessary. What I mean by English thinking is that international students should no longer mentally translate others' statements from English into their own native language, but rather practice thinking and speaking simultaneously via English at the same time. Additionally, we should never be ashamed of our English skills. We must always be aware that English is our second language and we can never hope to speak English as fluently as our mother tongue. Americans never expect international students to be fluent in English because it only serves as a course.
