  • Essay / Analysis of the prayer poem before birth - 2729

Discover how the poems Prayer Before Birth, Mother in a Refugee Camp, War Photographer and three other poems consider life's trials and/or fears. The trials and fears of life are something that is explored through literature and poetry. This is a very powerful thing and there are many poems that reveal a whole new world of fears and trials of life. The poems “Prayer Before Birth”, “Mother in a Refugee Camp” and “War Photographer” are poems that are just as strong as the fears and trials of life shown in the poetry. In "Prayer Before Birth", written by Louis MacNeice during World War II, the character (an unborn child) shows his fear of entering the world and is afraid of what the world can do to innocent people: he does so through a form of a prayer in which he pleads to turn away from the danger that the future may hold for us. “A Mother in a Refugee Camp,” written by Chinua Achebe, is about the mother of her dying child who continues to care for him. The poem talks about the horrible conditions they had to live in and depicts death that cannot be avoided and the loss of loved ones. “War Photographer,” written by Carol Ann Duffy, describes the inner battle of a war photographer as he returns home to England after finishing a tour. He struggles to hold onto his feelings as the horror and terror he witnessed resurfaces into his normal life. WH Auden wrote "Refugee Blues" in which the character talks to his wife about how they don't fit in anywhere because they are Jewish. “The Seed Merchant's Son,” written by Agnez Grozier Herbertson, is about the loss of his son, however, towards the end of the poem there is a positive ending as the seed merchant finds himself back in nature. Finally, 'The Target'... middle of paper ...... what great love for a child and the feeling that the mother will never abandon her child even if he is sadly dying. In "The Seed Merchant's Son", the seed merchant lost his son to the war, which had a huge impact on his life. Similar to "a mother in a refugee camp", the seed seller is unable to let his son go and he was affected more than his dead son. Another poem “the target” is very strong because it shows how ineffective war is. This shows that the soldiers fighting in the war do not want to fight against each other and that war is something people fight for even though it may be something they don't necessarily agree with . Last but not least, "War Photographer" is a poem that shows Carol Anne Duffy's reaction to all the suffering and how selfish humans are because their sympathy for those who suffer does not last long..
