  • Essay / Summary of Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau

Working without passion leads individuals down the path of a long and boring life that will never impact the rest of society, just like the extent of a machine's inheritance. “Hire not a man who does your work for money, but one who does it for love” (“Life Without” Thoreau 9). Thoreau is not saying that all men should or should not be millionaires and live in a way that others envy. Rather, he suggests that every man should do what makes him happy, because a life without principles is not a life that anyone can truly enjoy living; even if it meant becoming a millionaire. Thoreau believed that everyone had different types of potential and that everyone should strive to realize their respective potential.
