Conscientiousness in Derek JeterPersonality AnalysisAuthor's NoteThis article was prepared for the course Personality Psychology 260, taught by Dr. Kaplan.Derek Jeter, one of the players and baseball's most respected and admired leaders, is led by the personality trait conscientiousness. Conscientiousness is defined as “a character in which the individual values and obeys order and duty, acts competently, and, perhaps, values achievement.” (Mayer, 2007, p. 284). It is also defined as a “tendency to exercise self-discipline, act conscientiously, and strive for results relative to measurements or expectations.” (OED, 2014). Jeter's hard work, tenacity and desire to improve helped shape his strong and inspiring character, for which many players, coaches and fans admire him. An example of Jeter's conscientious personality comes through in a quote he gave to a newspaper in 1999: "I don't think you'll ever sit down and say you're good, until you hit a thousand without errors." Derek Jeter is a positive role model for young and old and, as Michel Jordan says, “reflects a positive image”, making him an iconic athlete in America (Leung, 2010). Jeter has shown signs of awareness since he started playing baseball. At the end of his first season in the big leagues, he was named Rookie of the Year (Derek Jeter Official Site, 2011). He attributed this to his goal of being the best and achieving everything he could, a value of conscience. This quality of skill has led him to numerous successes on the baseball field, including multiple World Series championships, All-Star game appearances, and MVP awards as a shortstop. His work ethic as a player is unparalleled by the majority of baseball players...... middle of paper ...... most amplifies awareness through his actions on and off the baseball field .ReferencesAnonymous.
