    The deliberate infliction of pain and suffering on children is child abuse and is treated by society as a serious crime. Despite strict laws against child abuse, it sometimes goes unreported and unpunished. The perpetrators of child abuse are most often the child's own parents. A study in 2005 showed that 79.4 percent of perpetrators were parents and 6.8 percent were other family members. In the United States, nearly 1 in 100 children are abused as children, and an average of five children die from abuse every day (USDHHS). Some cases may be worse than others, but child abuse always has a dramatic effect on a person's life as it continues to affect the victim throughout their adolescence and into adulthood. What effects does abuse have on a child's life from adolescence to adulthood? Child abuse is a major problem facing our country. Bridget Schulte of the Washington Post addressed this problem our nation has with child abuse through her article, "Effects of Child Abuse, If Left Untreated, Can Last a Lifetime, Report Says" . Bridget reported on a major study that was not relevant to others in the past. 20 years for child abuse and neglect. Through this study, researchers from the National Academy of Science reported that the harmful consequences of child abuse can reshape a child's brain and last a lifetime. The readings suggest that if child abuse and neglect are left untreated, they can profoundly influence a child's mental and physical health. Additionally, the child will have a lesser ability to control their emotions, impulses, and ability to relate as a child and as an adult. When children are still young, their world often revolves around their parents. Parents are the main foundation of safety,...... middle of paper ...... in life on board, because they have trust issues, or if it just has the overall impact to modify our brains in a way that makes us seem less important to others, child abuse is strictly prohibited, but it is so easily overlooked. Witnessing or experiencing child abuse should be reported immediately to stop further harm. Children are the future of our society and if they are mistreated, what kind of fate will their children's future hold for them? Protecting them from the harms of child abuse will ensure a positive future for them and for our society.
