According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die every day because of poverty (Facts and Statistics on Poverty, para. 4), and these are not only children. Although this figure may seem surprisingly high, it was higher in previous years. The “Poverty levels over time, world population (%)” chart shows the percentage of poverty levels decreasing over time (Poverty Facts And Stats). From over 30% surviving on $1 a day to just over 10%, global citizens are succeeding in raising awareness of global poverty and reducing the number of people experiencing it, but not all. Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names (para. 8). A billion people without adequate education, a billion people who would die for the riches and luxuries of the middle class, we have a billion people suffering from poverty, about 14% of the world's population.
