Essay / The Real Side of Detroit: The Diverse City - 1677
Detroit is a very famous and diverse city. “Somewhere behind its neglected, graffiti-covered skyscrapers are charming reminders of a city that was once among the richest in the world” (Gray). This city has been through a lot. Detroit was founded by the French in 1701 and then used as a fur trading post. Jumping a bit into the future, it experienced riots and equal rights protests on its bustling streets. Detroit is also known as the Motor City. “In the mid-20th century, one in six American workers was employed directly or indirectly by the automobile industry” (Sugrue). Even in this current century, it has plenty to offer, including musical groups playing for free on the river walk, winter blast with arts and crafts activities and ice sculptures, and much more. Most don't give Detroit the time of day before simply judging it based on the news and what they hear. Detroit is looked down upon for its poverty and high crime rate, but its new buildings and major attractions continue to draw crowds. Not to mention that Detroit has always had crime problems dating back to the riots of the 1960s. Detroit has not had disasters but also triumphs. Some of these include being the motor city and playing a key role in manufacturing weapons for World War II. Unfortunately, since those triumphs, Detroit has fallen and revivals now attempt to occur every year. Along with revivals, attractions also play a key role in Detroit's comeback. They organize major events like the International Auto Show, Lions Games and places like Belle Isle to attract people to visit and spend money in the city. Detroit is a fallen and abused work of art. Many people are now rebuilding the city to show its true beauty and potential..
