Essay / The Federal Government Should Defund Police Forces
Millions of free citizens around the world have spoken out against misconduct by law enforcement officers. In the United States alone, 8,800 police officers are reported to have used excessive force in the line of duty (Packman). One of the main causes of excessive use of force by police is anxiety and anger caused by poor compensation. The police are a force intended to protect the population against threats, not to pose a threat. Police officers are not paid enough for the dangerous work they do every day. The federal government should provide a secure environment to properly maintain a country of law. When the police do not do their job properly, the environment is not safe. Therefore, the federal government must increase funding for the police force to ensure a better and more effective police force and work to eliminate police misconduct. U.S. police forces should receive additional federal funding; the additional funds will create a better economy, create a safer environment, and prevent abuse of the system by police. The economy, in most countries, is the number one priority. The prosperity of a country is judged by its economic value and the quantity of capital it acquires. Investing more funds in the police force will boost the economy in several ways. First, funding the force will create many new jobs. “In San Juan and Carolina, Puerto Rico, the federal government provided money to police forces, which created more than 118,000 new jobs involving law enforcement” (Walsh). The majority of people agree that creating jobs leads to a much stronger economy and can help put money into the hands of poor people who can't find work. Karen Dillon, a former police chief, says...... middle of newspaper ......overview of police forces around the world (Dillon). Additionally, the federal government could decide what police can and cannot have, preventing the force from purchasing unnecessary items and misspending the new funds. With a strong flow of money into the police force, we could create a larger, more effective and safer police force. More branches of the force could be opened to help solve, prove or investigate crimes and, with additional funding, police could obtain an increased amount of technology. Without these elements, the police cannot be as effective as they could be. The police are more effective in fighting crime when they have a higher salary. All of these additional benefits are all the result of increased federal funding for police forces. The federal government must better fund the police.
