He mainly covered wars such as the Cuban War of Independence for the Daily Telegraph and the Boer War in 1899 for the Morning Post (web.a.ebscohost.com). While reporting on the Boer War in South Africa, he was captured and imprisoned (web.a.ebscohost.com). He escaped to tell this story and became known throughout Britain thanks to this adventure (web.a.ebscohost.com). His first book of over forty was written based on his experiences as a journalist.
