Articles in magazines, books, movies, television shows, and even music promote teenage sex acts as well as teen pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy is an epidemic glorified by today's media, it is the main promoter, or cause, of this crucial social problem. Teenage pregnancy has many negative effects, some well-known and others more secretive. Some of the most revolutionary and effective measures relate to the financial aspect of being a teen parent. Fifty percent of teenage mothers seek welfare during the first five years of their child's life. This is one of many facts that illustrate the almost non-existent financial stability of teenage parents. According to a study of 100 teenage mothers in the UK, only eleven percent of teenage mothers receive a salary (Teenage Pregnancy). With such rates, the financial burden falls not only on the families of teenage parents, but also on the rest of the world's citizens. In 2008, nearly eleven billion dollars of American taxpayer money was spent to care for and support these teenage mothers and their children (About). Of course, a large portion of these single mothers do not receive any form of support from the fathers of their children.
