  • Essay / Slaughter House Five - 790

Soldiers who have been to war have seen, done, or heard things that will deeply disturb most people. When this happens to soldiers, they may eventually begin to suffer from problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder. This means that they sometimes become violent, start crying for no apparent reason, or even start having flashbacks that take them back to the war they were in. I believe BillyPilgrim suffers from PTSD in the book Slaughterhouse Five and there are a lot of them. ways in which this becomes evident throughout Kurt Vonnegut's novel. The first reason that proves that Billy Pilgrim suffers from PTSD is this quote from the book “He has seen his birth and death many times,” he says, “and pays random visits to all the events in between. .” (Vonnegut 14) This helps support my thesis because he travels through time and has already seen his death and birth several times. It also helps support my thesis by the fact that he randomly returns to different eras in his past and relives them. My first secondary citation comes from “PTSD Symptoms and Domestic Violence versus Violence Among Veterans in Iraq and Afghanistan,” “Findings provide limited support for the hypothesis that PTSD “flashbacks” among veterans are linked to violence. This secondary quote from "PTSD Symptoms and Domestic Violence versus Violence in Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans" helps support my thesis because most veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars tend to have flashbacks triggered or sustained by the violence for the most part. This helps me because Billy tends to travel back or have flashbacks involving violence from when he was at war and when he was in the Dresden POW camp. My second quote from the book Slau...... middle of paper ...... During the periods after World War II, people had not yet really diagnosed PTSD, so veterans of war, for example: Billy Pilgrim, doctors, family members, etc... could This doesn't really help veterans in their condition. In conclusion, I believe I had supported my thesis with evidence (quotations) from the book itself to help me argue that my thesis was correct. I had also found three secondary evidence (quotations) from reliable sources that will support my primary evidence for my thesis. I had fully backed up my thesis without others really being able to challenge it since I found reliable information from reliable sources. In the finale, I had explained and supported my thesis that I believed Billy Pilgrim suffered from PTSD in the book Slaughterhouse Five and it appears in many ways in Kurt Vonnegut's novel..
