Essay / The Negative Effects of Texting and Social Communication
TitleA recent survey indicates that of the seventy-three percent of American adults who text, young adults between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four send in average 105.5 text messages each day. (Lou). Adolescents and ardent advocates might call it the most natural form of everyday communication, while some academics and researchers call it a "pervasive form of communication" (Pascual-Ferrá, Liu, and Beatty). The art of texting has certainly changed and arguably improved the way we communicate as a society. In this article, I argue that while texting is undoubtedly an important addition to communication, its disadvantages to our society as a whole far outweigh its usefulness. Texting deters healthy relationships and communication, deters learning and retention of information, and is quickly becoming a leading cause of distracted driving deaths. Many studies have linked texting to anxiety and social disorders. Although texting may be a more convenient form of communication, it has been shown to have a negative effect on building social relationships. For example, data collected by a group of communications researchers showed that instead of creating more emotional connections using texting and instant messaging, teens are using texting to create separate social media worlds (Lou). Additionally, teens are even more dependent on their cell phones, hoping that their close relationships and friendships will be maintained through frequent text messages (Lou). This behavior is unhealthy because it hinders the growing development of social communication in adolescents. Teenagers now feel like they have to have their cell phone on them at all times in the middle of a paper......on the road. and texting both because texting has become an inherent part of our culture as a whole. The problem of texting and driving is a national epidemic and has no simple solution. Research suggests that it's no longer just a distraction, people are addicted to their phones to the point of addiction. According to an article published by the Boston Globe, people who habitually use their cell phones on a daily basis have a harder time stopping themselves from reacting when they are behind the wheel (Neyfakh). There cannot be a clear dichotomy between positive and positive. negative points of texting. Trying to claim that would be ridiculous, because texting certainly has its positive attributes. The purpose of this essay is not to claim that text messaging is bad for our society, but to draw attention to the negative effects that most people overlook..
