Are nurses accepted by nurses? Nursing was primarily a female career, and over the years, men are moving toward the nursing role (McMillan, Morgan, & Ament, 2008). The shortage of nurses could be one of the reasons why men are entering the nursing field. According to (McMillan, Morgan & Ament, 2008, in 1963, 1% of nurses were male and in 2000, 5.4% are male. People question a man's sexuality if they engage in nursing profession. The public assumes that nurses are homosexual, as cited by (McMillan, Morgan and Ament, 2008. While women are accepted in the role of doctor, men are challenged by the role of care. A study was conducted to determine the attitude of acceptance of nurses by nurses (McMillan, Morgan & Ament, 2008) A quantitative-descriptive design was used to investigate the level of acceptance of nurses by nurses. practicing registered nurses in rural and urban areas The setting was a large Midwestern state with both urban and rural areas. The shortage of nurses was evident (McMillan, Morgan, & Ament, 2008). The university gave approval for the study if participants returned the personal data sheet and completed the study tool. a sample of 144 registered nurses was required to obtain an alpha of 0.05 at the 0.80 power level, according to McMillan, Morgan, & Ament, 2008). Address lists of all registered nurses were obtained. The sample was selected by counties with 100 or fewer registered nurses (rural area) and by counties with 2,000 registered nurses (urban area) or more. Rural and urban areas would be the dependent variables. Only an address and license in the state after 1959 and female recognition... middle of paper ...... both men and women enter nontraditional occupations, acceptance would be expected to increase as that the individual would gain confidence, be competent and be a contributing member of this profession (McMillan, Morgan and Ament, 2008). Some limitations include self-administered questionnaires due to self-report rather than observation. The return rate and generalization of population results to other populations are not feasible. The area limitation did not give a great benchmark to counties in other states. It would be important to re-evaluate the study in other states and include a larger sample for further evaluation. Another limitation would be that the assessment tool, focusing on competence and confidence, could give a more accurate picture of acceptance, rather than the modified AI (McMillan, Morgan & Ament, 2008). Although the study was not as large as expected, it stimulates discussion.
