    Brazil: a country of diversityPart one: country profileThe Federative Republic of Brazil is the largest country in South America. It is also the country with the greatest diversity of people and geography. The capital of Brazil is Brasilia (“Brazilian Context”). The geography ranges from dense rainforest to sandy beaches. The majority of the population lives in the south of the country. They have started to take advantage of their natural resources and most of their economy is extractive (“Brazilian context”). Brazil is the only country in South and North America that predominantly speaks Portuguese (“Brazil”. A). Nearly 100% of the population speaks it (“Brazilian language”). They were under Portuguese domination for more than three centuries. The country gained its independence from the Portuguese on September 7, 1822. It is now a national holiday in Brazil (Central Intelligence). Being under Portuguese rule for so long caused their culture to be largely removed from Portugal and this is reflected in most social aspects of the country. (“Brazil”. A”). Brazil's economy is below the world average, but the growth rate is 0.9 per year ("Conservative Policy"). It is the second largest economy in the Western Hemisphere, but the largest in Latin America. (“‘Brazil.’ A”). For the location of Brazil, its economy is doing better than the places around it. In terms of nominal GDP, that is, gross domestic product, it is also the seventh in terms of purchasing power parity ("Brazil". A). The Brazilian economy continues to evolve on an upward slope and they hope that this will continue continuously. There is, however, much room for improvement.
