  • Essay / Effects of the Counterculture on Party Identification

IntroductionIn this article, I test whether the counterculture movement had an effect on party identification for young Americans between 1964 and 1972. I suspect that younger Americans were more inclined to become anti-war because of the countercultural movement; which correlates with a decrease in the number of them who identify as Democrats. I think there was a decrease in Democratic representation among younger Americans because the Democratic Party was in power at that time. The emergence of this movement is due to many factors, including: feminism, civil rights, the war in Vietnam, and lack of trust in government. The counterculture consisted mainly of new journalism, protests, drugs and psychedelic rock. My hypothesis was proven true through analysis of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child" and surveys conducted throughout this period. To test my hypothesis, I use Jimi Hendrix's 1968 song "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" and American newspaper data. Study on the national elections of 1964, 1968 and 1972. This song is full of sensory overload, or rather energization; which correlates with the fight against the war in Vietnam and in turn with the fight against the Democrats. In the data, I use party identification as the dependent variable, age as the independent variable, and query the years 1964, 1968, and 1972 separately to analyze the before, during, and after effects of the countercultural movement. I define youth as ages 17 to 24 in this test. Analysis of Jimi Hendrix's 1968 "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" I believe West Coast psychedelic music, such as "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" by Jimi Hendrix in 1968, played an important role in the Counter-Culture movement. This musical piece by Jimi Hendrix embodies the West Coast...... middle of paper ...... Polls also indicate declining partisan affiliation among young Americans for the Democratic Party. Younger Americans declined 7 percentage points more than older people, which is not a high number, but still significant in demonstrating that counterculture affects younger Americans more. This affected them more because they were more likely to join protests, go to concerts, and use drugs than the older population. Alternatively, another factor to consider in this test is that other events could have affected the results or that younger people were predisposed to react this way.
