In our society today, it is believed that young people strive when they have a strong support system in which they are shown affection and a kind of family intimacy; However, this way of raising a child was not popular until the mid-20th century. Before the 1900s, child-rearing manuals and advice books suggested that the primary purpose of childhood was to prepare the individual for adulthood and that the way to properly ensure preparation was to done “by constraint and deprivation”. 191)*. A behavioral psychologist, John B. Watson, claimed that parents should “above all avoid displays of affection” (Mintz, 191), which is sharply at odds with the way Inside Out depicts childhood. Riley's parents are seen as a constant resource for emotional and physical support and their acts of affection towards their daughter are portrayed in a positive light that often promotes their daughter's continued development.
