  • Essay / What are the pros and cons of the atomic bomb - 713

While this may have been true, there had been far more diplomatic alternatives that would have led to the same resolution. Many alternatives were discussed at the Interim Committee and proved to be much more peaceful. These alternatives included continued bombings and airstrikes, which would have ended the war six months later, allowing Japan to keep its emperor during a surrender, and even await the entry of the Soviet Union (3). Either of these options would have resulted in fewer civilian casualties, as all of the above would have been used to force a surrender. Nuclear weapons are therefore not the only or best way to end war. In a war without rules, it was entirely ethical for extreme measures to be taken. However, the Geneva Convention later demonstrated that it was unethical to attack enemy civilians. Even at previous conventions this was found to be illegal and immoral. In the case of Hague IV, it was demonstrated and ratified by Congress that attacking citizens or defenseless people was wrong (2). This was not the only treaty or convention, as there had been several others before. It was therefore unscrupulous and hypocritical for the United States to drop atomic bombs on the territory.
