    There are different types of therapy using horses. Hippotherapy means “treatment with the help of a horse” (Naomi Scott). The word hippopotamus is used because this term is derived from the Greek word hippopotamus which means horse. “Hippotherapy is generally indicated for children and adults with mild to severe neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction.” (Naomi Scott). This type of therapy uses the movement of the horse to improve the patient's neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction. These dysfunctions may include "abnormal muscle tone", impaired balance, impaired coordination, impaired communication, impaired sensorimotor function, postural asymmetry, poor postural control, reduced mobility and limbic system problems related to arousal, motivation and attention. Functional limitations related to gross motor skills such as sitting, standing, walking; expression and language skills; and behavioral and cognitive abilities can be improved through hippotherapy.
