Essay / Animal testing is inhumane and ineffective - 1329
If animals have feelings, then animal testing is wrong. The relationship between humans and animals has been a controversial and heated debate for decades. Many people have joined animal rights movements to advocate for the fair treatment of animals. Animals have no syntax, so there is no way to communicate with them precisely. For this reason, there is currently no evidence whether animals can feel the same level of emotions as humans. Peter Singer is a supporter of animal rights. In his essay “Animal Liberation,” he talks about what animals can feel. Singer, like many others, believes that animals can feel deeper levels of emotion than humans. Peggy Carlson wants to end animal testing, she and many others believe animal testing is inhumane and ineffective. If animals can suffer as much as humans, animal testing seems like a horrible practice. I tend to agree with Singer and Carlson on this subject. I think different animals have different levels of emotional complexity, some animals simply experience primal instincts and others experience emotions more akin to or on a human level. Taking this into account, I think animal testing is justified, but some of it is unnecessary and cruel. By examining animal behaviors and the scientific research done on the subject, it is evident that many animals can experience the same level of emotions as humans. In the “Animal Minds” episode of Radiolab, a scientist studying spindle cells was interviewed. Spindle cells are a type of brain cell that is linked to deeper levels of emotion in humans. Many animals have been found to also have these types of cells in their brains, indicating the possibility that they experience the same level of emotions as humans. It seems to me that... in the middle of the article... scientists did experiments on concentration camp inmates. They made breakthroughs in treating hypothermia, at the cost of freezing hundreds of unwitting humans. Many suffered multiple experiences and many died. Hypothermia tests could be considered humane compared to other experiments carried out on masses of prisoners. When the suffering caused is taken into account, some scientists flatly refuse to acknowledge what Nazi scientists learned. The testing of concentration camp inmates is considered one of the most atrocious events in history. If it were proven that animals can experience suffering on the same level as humans, then the testing should stop. But this would lead to a halt to scientific progress in various fields. Of course, temporarily, there is always a solution. We just have to find one.
