  • Essay / Teen Texting - 982

Teen TextingTechnology is always evolving and changing and in the 1990s, texting became the new phenomenon. Texting is the ability to send a brief message from one cell phone to another. This allowed people to be more efficient and independent. Teens can know immediately if there's a problem, or simply and quickly send a text message to let someone know they're late. Over the years, texting has grown in popularity and is now one of the primary forms of communication for teens. However, this form of communication has led to long-lasting negative social behaviors in some adolescents. The main social behavior affected by texting is face-to-face communication. Some adolescents have difficulty communicating effectively with peers, and especially adults, when speaking in person (McWhorter). It is much easier for them to express their feelings through text messages. Due to the frequency of texting, teens tend to be more comfortable communicating with their fingers than their mouths. For many, texting is easier than talking face to face due to fear of the other person's response. For example, if a teenager gets upset while texting, it's easy to hide their emotions, but when they're face to face, it becomes almost impossible. In an article published in Global Post, Sheryl Faber agrees with this fact, stating: "The flat language of texts has taken away one-on-one, in-depth discussions filled with feelings or emotions." This form of impersonal conversation leads to poor communication between adolescents and their peers. A problem that has also been seen among those who text often and have difficulty in a formal setting. Many employers believe that the younger generation of employees have difficulty interviewing for jobs... in the middle of school and also for the rest of their lives. They cannot talk comfortably on the phone because they are not used to it. All of these effects of texting have a significant negative impact on the lives of adolescents.
