  • Essay / Doing Good to Others - 1437

Just recently, Miss CI's court visited Gillette Children's Hospital. While we were there, I met a mother of one who was visiting the hospital for a check-up on her daughter, after the operation she had just undergone. The mom and I started talking about life and the crazy things that can happen unexpectedly, when she started crying. I asked her why and she told me how grateful she was to Miss Crosby-Ironton Court for giving up our time to play with the children. At this point I started to cry as she continued to explain why she didn't get to choose her life. She had no choice in letting her daughter take this position, but we girls had to choose to be there and help her. When she finished speaking, I was reminded why I love what I do. There is no greater feeling than volunteering your time to make someone else's day better. There are so many more benefits to volunteering than just the comforting feeling you get at the end of the day. Volunteering is the free offer to do something; for example, my friend Madison volunteers her time every day during her office hour to go help one of the elementary school teachers, Ms. Larson. There are various ways to volunteer. Like helping a primary school child with their homework, going to the hospital and keeping the children occupied before their appointments, going to a nursing home and reading to patients who can no longer do so. You can even mow someone's lawn or even walk someone's dog. There really are no limits to doing something for free. Volunteering can also help you develop your social skills. If you are a shy person, giving your time is a good way to break out of your box. When you meet new people, you learn how to start a conversation and keep it going, and you may even learn... middle of paper... how you've ever felt. I love what I do, but what makes it even better are the huge benefits I can get from it for my future. Not to mention the amazing people I get to meet along the way.
