Educators are beginning to understand that older adults still retain the ability to learn and that keeping the brain active throughout adulthood has many benefits. Older people may find attending college inspiring; however, it appears that most of older adults' lifelong learning takes place outside of traditional academia. A lifelong learning educational model offers a fluid perspective that views individuals as both learners and teachers throughout their lives (Feldman, 1991). According to Mainheimer (2008), the growth of lifelong learning opportunities can be attributed to national efforts to encourage lifelong learning societies. individuals of all ages, initiatives that respond to the growing population of older people, and the development and continuation of adult and continuing education movements. Additionally, the overall education level of older adults has increased, as more than 80 percent of older men and women have completed high school. Lifelong learning promotes active aging of the elderly population (Tam, 2013). The World Health Organization defines active aging as “the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation and safety to improve quality of life as people age” (WHO, 2002). Lifelong learning benefits the older population as a whole. Options for Lifelong Learning There is great diversity within the older adult population and, as a result, various options for lifelong learning programs exist.
