Essay / Henry Drummond is an acclaimed criminal defense attorney and an avowed agnostic, so how could a man like this respect and appreciate the life of fundamentalist Christian Matthew Harrison Brady? Throughout the play Inherit the Wind, Drummond demonstrates that although his views are very different from those of Brady and most of the residents of Hillsboro when it comes to religion, he is able and willing to respect the values and beliefs of these people. After learning of Brady's death, Drummond's respect for the man only intensified. Despite Drummond and Brady's obvious past regarding both their former friendship and their contrasting views on religion, Drummond still has a certain respect for Brady, and while this does not affect the trial, it does affect the play. In Brady's death, this becomes evident. how important Brady was in Drummond's life, proven by much of what he says, but one line more than the rest. As EK Hornbeck mocks Brady after his death, Drummond defends his old friend: “But Matt Brady got lost. Because he sought God too high and too far. (114). What Drummond means could be interpreted in a few different ways, the first, and probably least likely, given Drummond's beliefs, could be Brady's presidential career, or rather lack thereof. Perhaps Drummond assumes that Brady believed that power brought one closer to God. Brady has run for president three times in a row, and it becomes clear how crazy this is driving Brady by watching what he was thinking in his final moments, BRADY (As he is executed; in a strange voice and unreal)Mr. Chief Justice, Citizens of these United States, During my term in the White House, I pledge to carry out my agenda for the...... middle of paper ......the room audience, it would have been much more confusing for the reader and the audience. Despite the complicated history of Drummond and Brady, one should not be unprofessional and bring the matter into the courtroom or let it interfere a lot with the game. Drummond still has a lot of respect for Brady as a man thoughtful despite his complicated journey. With Brady's death, Drummond greatly appreciates the life of Matthew Harrison Brady. The reader or audience can understand what Henry Drummond means when he says that Brady got lost because "he sought God too high and too far" by examining both Brady's and Drummond's beliefs. Although their story isn't the smoothest, neither man allows her into the courtroom. Inherit the Wind is an amazing play and its characters are well developed, full of good opinions and strong personalities.
