Employee Organizing ResearchWhat Are Unions Doing?Industry deregulation, growing protests, and labor mobility have made it even more difficult for traditional unions to more difficult to maneuver. In recent decades, unions have experienced partial expansion due to the shift from "old economy" sectors, which often involved manufacturing and large companies, to small and medium-sized companies outside of manufacturing. . In the recent past, union candidates have proliferated in more companies. This makes collective bargaining a difficult task, as union officials have to work with a larger number of experienced managers and most of the time find it difficult to systematize employees. Management therefore ended up winning by giving what it had brought to the negotiating table (Serre 1). The evolution of today's worker has also changed the functions of unions. The normal concentration of union officials works on behalf of employees when they talk with bosses. However, when urbanized economies move away from their reliance on manufacturing, the line separating managers and workers becomes blurred. Additionally, mechanization, computers, and improved worker efficiency lead to a reduction in the number of personnel needed to handle similar work. The union insists that salary increases be minimal, which management ultimately approves, but if this is impossible due to the current situation, they will be granted. The lower wage increases labor costs for firms employing low-skilled workers. This reduces the gap between the proportion of income of less experienced and more experienced staff; the most competent staff should be represented by a union. ...... middle of paper ......rers. The UAW convinced Detroit automakers to give UAW affiliates, in the form of raises, their profits to fund their R&D savings. The follow-up action was that Detroit was far behind the "green movement" rivalry toward more fuel-efficient cars, which may have been designed with money given to unions (St. Paul 6).
