    Throughout the course, we learned a lot about women and their role in the sex work industry. The glimpses we gained into the lives of these women depicted various lifestyles, from the glamorous to the unsavory to the downright harsh; all of these women have different stories that motivate their participation in the sex work industry. As we learned in the 20/20 documentary "Working Girls in America," our society perpetuates the idea that prostitutes are young, pretty, happy girls, or that they follow the path of Julia Roberts as pretty female. However, we have read the reality of the lives of these women. In “Prostitution and Sex Trafficking,” we learn about all the difficult circumstances that push people into prostitution. According to Kari Lydersen's article in Chapter 3 of the book, 57% of prostitutes in the state of Illinois were sexually abused as children. Furthermore, 70% of them thought that it was abuse that had pushed them into prostitution (Gerdes, 2006, p. 115-116). These women did not receive the necessary help and ultimately turned to prostitution....
