Whether it's what projects the company should take on, power struggles, or employee personality differences, conflict is something that cannot be avoided . It is important that managers and employees understand how to manage conflict in a healthy way and how to work together to find solutions to problems that arise. Every person has their own approach to dealing with conflict, and I'm no different. There are different types of conflicts, so there are different approaches to trying to resolve them. For both types of conflicts, I like to use dialectics. I want both parties to be able to sit down and help everyone understand the pros and cons of each alternative. Once all parties have made their case, the group can together choose the best course of action based on the information presented. If there are no or few conflicting opinions, I often like to use devil's advocate to make sure people understand the downsides of all ideas and avoid making a decision blindly. The most common form of approach I use is compromise. In compromising, both parties must give up part of their idea so that the group can come to a more collective decision. I believe that several people can usually come up with more ideas and solutions than a single person working alone, thus coming up with the best possible one. When I was my fraternity's philanthropy chair, my committee was split down the middle on the design of the t-shirts we sold. One side wanted a blue shirt with green letters and red letters, while the other wanted a white shirt with purple and pink letters. We ultimately settled on a white shirt with green and red lettering, and both parties were happy with that decision. They had to abandon part of their shirt design in order to find the solution, and this final design was the best we could have come up with. The least common form of approach I use to manage conflict is competition. I don't have a dictator personality and I don't care if I get everything I want at all times. In my experiences where I worked under a boss or manager, I was usually much lower than them on the company totem pole, so I just listen to what they tell me , although I don't agree with it. In cases where I was in charge of other people, most of the time our group came to a collective opinion on how to resolve our conflicts. I wanted to show them that I respected their hard work and commitment, and their opinions by giving them a voice in the decision-making process.
