Essay / The serious problem of global warming - 829
Global warming is a major problem in today's world and it hampers the quality of life of all species. This affects their habitats and environments. Rising temperatures and changing landscapes in the Arctic Circle are endangering several animal species. Only the most adaptable will survive. If we fail to reduce consumption of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, scientists say that over the course of the 21st century, the Earth could warm up to an additional 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit. The first initial problem is melting ice caps, which would cause sea levels to rise. There are 5,773,000 cubic miles of water in permanent snow, glaciers and ice caps. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, if all the glaciers melted today, the seas would rise about 230 feet. Melting ice caps will unbalance the global ecosystem. Ice sheets are fresh water, and when they melt they will make the oceans less salty. Desalination of seawater will disrupt currents, which regulate temperatures. Ice sheets are white and reflect sunlight, much of which is reflected back into space, further cooling the Earth. The only reflector is the ocean if the ice caps melt. This is a problem because darker colors absorb sunlight, warming the Earth even more. Although some regions of the Earth will become wetter due to global warming, others will face severe droughts and heat waves. Droughts are expected in Europe, but Africa will suffer the worst consequences. Water is already very scarce in Africa and, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, global warming will worsen the situation and could lead to wars and conflicts. Worse still, global warming has other effects on human health. Rising temperatures will make...... middle of paper ......boring, impractical and nuclear power is dangerous. Our idea of a possible solution is not to use aerosol cans. They emit harmful chemicals that deplete the ozone layer. The good thing about this idea is that it will help save the Earth. The downside to no longer using aerosol cans is that many people use them for everyday activities and it would be difficult to find substitutes. If we were in government, we would choose to plant trees, because this idea would be much less expensive and impractical since not using aerosol cans. Planting trees would also be an easier project to start than installing expensive solar panels and wind turbines. We think this solution would be the best to implement, but it would also have a disadvantage because there is no room to plant trees. Since many are cut down for the construction of businesses, houses, roads, etc...
