TV shows such as Grey's Anatomy and House "place white male doctors in leading roles on medical shows that, by default, leave nursing as marginal, secondary, even tertiary, and even useless” (Heilemann, 2012). Since nurses are not centralized in medical shows, viewers do not know the true role of nurses in the healthcare team. The role of the nurse in medical shows is taken up by the doctors. In Grey's Anatomy, the doctor quickly calls a nurse when he drops something, showing that nurses do everything doctors tell them to do and perform tasks doctors don't want to do. Additionally, nurses not only cure patients, but they also care for patients. This concept is completely absent from medical shows or taken up by doctors. So, people are not informed about the qualifications and disciplines of nursing. A study of 106 16-year-old students showed that 13.2% of them perceived nurses as medical assistants and 4.7% believed that no qualifications were required to become a nurse (Whitehead, 2007). These students may perceive nurses as medical assistants due to media portrayals of nurses under doctor's orders. Additionally, the absence of nurses in medical shows contributes to the viewer's lack of knowledge about nursing qualifications.
