Criminal profiling can be a rather useful tool for criminal investigators of all types. Many departments use profiling to stop terrorists, gangs, cybercriminals, counterintelligence, white-collar crimes, and especially serial killers. Criminal profiling involves examining the behavior of the criminal to better understand their personality. A doctor does the same thing when looking at symptoms to diagnose a certain disease. Being able to understand this person's personality brings you closer to capturing them. The history of profiling begins as early as the 1800s. Criminal profiling is what it is today thanks to the contributions of investigators of the time. The first documented case where profiling was used was in the Jack the Ripper serial killer case. Jack the Ripper was a serial killer in London who mutilated prostitutes. Dr. Thomas Bond reached the first conclusion while performing an autopsy on one of the victims. To better understand the serial killer, Dr. Bond pieced together the murders and created a profile for authorities. Although Jack the Ripper was never found, Dr. Bond became the first offender profiler. In order to accurately profile a case, you need to gather as much information as possible. Certain information can be very useful in capturing the suspect, such as the time or type of crime, the weapon used and even the victim. Knowing this information can help us better understand the suspect's mind. Based on the information, we can see if there is evidence of mental illness or even if the suspect has done it before.
