Essay / Syria - 1290
Imagine a country covered in ruins where cries of pain fill the air and piles of corpses litter the ground. It may not sound like reality, but this terror is destroying many lives in Syria. Many live in poverty, while most Americans live the "American dream": having a nice house, clothes, and food. Many children these days ask for things very bluntly and usually get what they ask for. A Syrian child could ask for a drop of clean water and not get an answer for days. Most Syrians don't even have the pleasure of having a meal every day, let alone living in peace for a few hours. Problems like this have not appeared recently. Most have suffered this way their entire lives. No food, no shelter and no respect. Among the many problems in Syria, one of them includes the numerous human rights violations. The Syrian government suppresses freedom of information and equality for women and uses humans as shields in war. Syria is violating human rights that allow everyone to have freedom of information and live freely. The number of news media has increased in recent years, but Syrians are still subject to strict internet censorship. Syria bans websites for political reasons and arrests people who access them. They don't want other opinions to influence theirs. Even internet cafes are required to record all comments that users post on chat sites. We can't say what they really think for fear of being arrested. According to the Human Rights Report 2010: Syria, websites such as Wikipedia, Youtube and Facebook were also blocked between 2008 and 2011. In doing so, the amount of information arriving in Syria from around the world exterior is minimal and restrictive. Many don't know what... middle of paper ...... pain-filled screams fill the air and piles of corpses litter the ground. These poor citizens of this country have to face all these problems. The Syrian government suppresses freedom of information, equal opportunities for men and women, and uses humans as shields during war. What would someone do if they were treated like this? Many would call the government or just talk to someone who can help them. The Syrians have no source of help. Their only hope for help, the government, is the one that is causing all these problems. To relieve these suffering souls in Syria, everyone just needs to reach out their hand. If international law is so important in assessing Syria's actions, shouldn't it be just as important in assessing the proposed US response? (Hollar) Helping Syria would only make the United States a more helpful and resourceful country..
