Essay / Spartacus Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Analysis
The character I chose to analyze suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is Spartacus, who is played by Andy Whitfield in the hit series Spartacus Blood and Sand on Starz. Spartacus Blood and Sand is directed by Grady Hall and Rick Jacobson. Spartacus is a Thracian soldier who was punished for his treason against the Roman commander Legatus Claudius Glaber, played by Craig Parker. Spartacus was to be executed in the gladiator games and his wife Sura, played by Erin Cummings, was to be sold into slavery. However, Spartacus managed to defend his life by killing four top-notch gladiators in the arena. After his victory, he was purchased by Baticitus, played by John Hannah. Spartacus must have been a slave trained to become a gladiator in the ludus of Baticitus. When Spartacus began to bring great fortune through his earnings and social advancement to the ludus of Baticitus, he was promised a return to his wife, Sura. After Spartacus became champion of Capua and went undefeated, he realized that Baticitus was not going to keep his promise to reunite him with his wife because too many victories had passed. Spartacus later discovered in a recurring flashback and present-day footage that Baticitus had Sura, Spartacus's wife, killed. An analysis of Spartacus' behavior regarding nightmares, insomnia, and haunting memories reveals that Spartacus suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. The first behavior that proves that Spartacus suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder is the nightmare of not finding his wife. Most of his nightmares were of his wife being by his side during these ordeals and she was giving him advice on how to survive and bring them together again. Her nightmares seemed to be prophecies or warnings of what was to come...... middle of paper ...... a person felt so overwhelmed, exhausted and overworked that they would. Treatments for PSTD range from complex psychobiological features that make therapy difficult. . The three components of treatment are patient education, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy (Cabaltica, 2000). Pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy have been shown to alleviate all three clusters of PTSD symptoms: reliving, avoidance, and hypervigilance (Cabaltica, 2000).
