  • Essay / Calm after a Classroom Panic - 925

Name one good thing that happens when a teacher leaves the classroom unsupervised. Nothing. Nothing good happens when a teacher leaves a classroom unsupervised. It has been an unwritten rule since second grade that when the teacher leaves the room, it's a free for all. The first graders don't have the courage to revolt, but by the time second grade arrives, the unsupervised room goes crazy. Even with age and maturity, this rule continues throughout a student's college career and must be strictly adhered to unless one wants to be an outsider among his or her peers. However, there is always one child who continues what they are supposed to do when the teacher leaves even though their classmates will find this strange. For as long as I can remember, that child has been me. Even now, when the teacher leaves, I don't try to get out of it. I remember thinking when I was little that there might be spy cameras ready to catch me if I tried something funny, and even now that I'm older, I don't take any chances. The one time I do something, I know someone will be there to catch me. Going to college, I thought everything would be different. I was wrong. Once again, when our teacher left the room, chaos ensued. It wasn't even a different, more mature form of chaos. The same things that happen when a second grade class is left unsupervised occur. The only differences were the use of better vocabulary and boys and girls not being afraid to talk to each other. Before leaving the room, our teacher gave us simple instructions: just discuss the reading and how it can be applied to daily life. Then he left, leaving a group of tired and stressed students discussing homework that no one wanted to do in the first place. As soon as the middle of the sheet was old enough to participate. For once, a jock was nice to the nerd. It was fantastic. He may never tell his friends what he did and may never say hello to me during class, but at least he was respectful. We still weren't really friends, but at least I knew he cared enough to apologize. The rule that was never written but is followed by almost all students in American classrooms was still in effect in this college classroom. Although this is a fun time of chaos for most students, some students don't feel the same way. I had always felt like an outsider, but that day I realized maybe I wasn't alone. There was a boy in my class who also felt bad from panic. Even though he was the cause of the panic that ensued when the teacher left the room, he was the first one I saw trying to calm the panic when the teacher returned..
