  • Essay / Different Ways Industries Affect Cities: How Heinz...

I-SearchMy subject is Heinz Ketchup. As some of you may know, I have a strong connection to Pittsburgh. On my last trip to Pittsburgh, I realized I didn't know much about Pittsburgh other than sports. I thought a great way to learn more about Pittsburgh would be to do a Pittsburgh-related I-Search project. I was originally going to write an article and call it The History of Pittsburgh, but people told me that was a bad idea and that it would be 700 pages long if I wrote it thoroughly. Then I decided to do my report on Pittsburgh industries, and since Ms. Bisson thought ketchup would be the most interesting, I decided to do my research on ketchup. Every time I drive through Pittsburgh on my way to my grandmother's house in White Oak, Pennsylvania I pass huge brick buildings with tall chimneys and wonder why they are there and what is going on inside the brick buildings. Some are steel mills and others are part of Heinz's Pittsburgh headquarters. I think doing my research on a topic related to these buildings can give me a better understanding of all the things I wonder about Pittsburgh. I arrived at my last question by modifying my original question. Which I arrived at by combining my interest in Pittsburgh industries versus Pittsburgh and my professor's opinion on which industry she thought would be most interesting (HJ Heinz Company). My initial question was, “What is the impact of the HJ Heinz Company on Pittsburgh?” » Then I tweaked it to focus a little more on the Heinz story. My dad yelled at me for choosing this topic and I felt like I would never get it right, but by spending long days on I-Search, I got my report in good shape. My current question is "What is... middle of paper... ...do more than you can handle." I should have chosen a subject that I knew something about or that my parents knew something about. And in the future, I will think carefully every time I have the opportunity to choose my topic. Sources cited Alberts, Robert. The right supplier. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1973. 297. Print.
