    Trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapyCognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a practical, empirically based form of psychotherapy that focuses on the relationships between emotions, behaviors and thoughts. Through CBT, patients are able to identify their distorted thoughts and modify their beliefs in order to change their behaviors. Once a patient changes their distorted thinking, they are able to think in a more positive and realistic way. Overall, CBT focuses on consistent problem-solving strategies and changing negative thought distortions and negative behaviors. There are different types of CBT, which share common elements. Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy is a type of CBT, which falls under the umbrella of CBT. Description of TFCBTTrauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT) is a form of CBT, which focuses on treating the trauma experienced by the patient. Drs. Judith Cohen, Esther Deblinger, and Anthony Mannarino developed TFCBT in the late 1980s (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Children and Adults, 2014). TFCBT uses principles adapted from cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure techniques to treat trauma-related symptoms as well as symptoms of depression, behavioral problems, and difficulties with caregivers. Behavioral modeling and body safety skills training can also be integrated into TFCBT (Ramirez de Arellano et al., 2014).
