Essay / Clarence Darrow's View on Determinism and Free Will
Determinism will not hold anyone responsible for their actions and each person will have no moral responsibility to society or to themselves. I don't believe that a higher being or events that happened long ago caused a serial killer to bomb an airport or a crowd of civilians. Additionally, I would like to believe that the actions I have done are of my own choice. For example, when I tried to woo my girlfriend when we first met, it wasn't "scripted" by another being. But I chose to trust and act on my feelings. I believe in moral responsibility and the reward, praise, and even punishment that comes with it. Not only me, but I would appreciate my family and all humans on Earth doing something because they choose to, but not because they are all puppets in another being's world. Now, in the case of Leopold and Loeb, I absolutely believe that they are responsible for the murder of the young boy and that no responsibility should be discounted towards their ancestors or those around them. I have complete confidence that these boys knew what they were doing and did it on their own initiative..
