  • Essay / Global Sea Level Rise: Polar Ice Caps - 1039

Humans' impact on Mother Earth is increasing in effect as sea levels rise. Global warming causes polar ice caps to melt , which is a major cause of the increase in the volume of our oceans. In addition, the troposphere is thickening, due to greenhouse gases, increasing the amount of radioactive waves which cause warming of sea water, leading to expansion of the oceans. Most climate scientists expect global ocean levels to rise between 1.5 and 5 feet by the end of this century. (Harkinson) Some members of our society feel that because climate change is not certain, they are unwilling to make a difference. to help. Many people are unaware of how quickly we have impacted Mother Earth. The melting of polar ice caps, leading to rising sea levels, should not be taken lightly. NASA satellites show a 9% decrease in the ice cap every decade. Every six years, an assessment report is produced by scientists, who have highlighted the need to make a difference before it is too late. The problem lies in uncontrolled human activity which takes for granted the resources that the Earth offers us. We are thus faced with the extinction of many types of flora and fauna, as natural habitats disappear. The IPCC is convinced that humans are the cause of much of the world's problem. The hottest years have peaked in the last ten years. Temperatures in Arctic regions are rising twice as fast as anywhere else. The Arctic's largest block of ice, the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, had existed for 3,000 years when it cracked in 2000 and split entirely, causing it to break into small pieces. (NRDC) Arctic regions are the most vulnerable because they reflect solar energy off their surface. However, as...... middle of paper ...... Additionally, reducing all fossil fuel energy, reusing products, and recycling will help the Earth.BibliographyGardiner, Lisa. "Warming of the polar regions". Windows on the Universe. Np, and Web.
