Essay / History of Crack - 772
Crack has been popular since the 1970s and mid-1980s. Crack is not a new drug; This medicine is obtained from the coca plant which grows mainly in South America. For many years, South American Indians chewed its leaves to build strength and energy. In the 1800s, cocaine was removed from its leaves and used as medicine. In the late 1800s, it was used as an anesthetic and to prevent surgical bleeding. In the next century, people recognized crack as an addictive narcotic, and its nonmedical use was ended by the Harrison Narcotics Act in 1914 (“How Does Crack Work?”). The cocaine powder is heated and a solid material insulates the boiling mixture. Then it is removed, dried and cut into “rocks” (Streetdrugs). Crack gets its name from the crackling sound it makes when simmered. Since coca bushes grow mainly in South America, it is very easy to produce crack cocaine and many statistics show that the United States and Canada have the most addicts. Crack is also considered a stimulant because it increases the action of the central nervous system and speeds up metabolism, leading to increased energy and alertness. Since it is a stimulant and a narcotic, once a person takes it, they crave it even more. Taking crack produces a feeling of euphoria and well-being (University of Maryland). The symptoms of crack cocaine are both physical and psychological. Physical and psychological withdrawal begins if the addict runs out of crack cocaine. Once he takes the drug, his tolerance level increases; he takes increased amounts of the medication each time to achieve the desired effects. Psychological indications include the following: excessive thoughts about buying crack, regular craving... middle of paper ... I don't know who pays for addicts for both detoxes. Educators in drug education programs encourage and present information in a way that persuades the public not to use drugs. Educators present their presentations by relating them to real-life situations (“Narconon Drug Education Program”). The drug changes the function and structure of living tissue. Crack makes a person hyperactive, alert, feels “good”, speeds up their metabolism, etc. However, these temporary “good” feelings lead to death, nausea, vomiting, respiratory bleeding and more. Nevertheless, there are many rehabilitation centers for abusers and rehabilitation doctors or counselors begin the patient's treatments once they have been submitted. We must stop using crack cocaine and help addicts by pushing them into rehab centers..
