Essay / Capital Punishment - 1341
Advantages of Capital PunishmentCapital punishment according to Phil .B, (2006), refers to the death penalty imposed by the government of a country on a person convicted of serious crimes like homicide, rape among others. Capital punishment has been a way of punishing people for many years. It is widespread in the United States, Asia and Middle Eastern countries. Over the past two centuries, there have been many reforms to capital punishment and it has been abolished in some states and countries. Executions, beheadings, hangings, electrocutions and lethal injections are some of the ways capital punishment is administered in different countries. Life imprisonment without parole has also been widely used and considered in place of the death penalty. According to Naik (2010), different people, nations and religions have different opinions regarding capital punishment. There are people who support it while others consider it inhumane and an immoral act contrary to the values of humanity. The debate on the issue of capital punishment (death penalty) continues because it is difficult to get everyone to agree on whether it is ethical and justifiable or not. Supporters of capital punishment view it as a way to deter crime, while those who oppose it argue that it only lowers the morality of a government but does not deter crime. One of the goals of governments is to ensure democracy and justice in a country. The death penalty provides appropriate punishment for those who commit murder. To be fair and just, the punishment of a crime should be equal to the crime which is an “eye for an eye” justice. Surely there would be no other punishment than death for a murderer. According to Naik (2010), capital punishment...... middle of paper...... is the way to ensure that this goal is achieved. It is a way of taking revenge on those who have been mandated to ensure justice since the offended cannot defend themselves. This remains the only way to avenge crimes on behalf of the victims.
