  • Essay / The Domino Effect - 749

In four days, a mass of tragic events cause two star-struck lovers to go from complete strangers to husband and wife to dead. This is a brief, breathtaking summary of the tragedy Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Throughout this play, numerous events cause a seemingly unbreakable love to be separated by banishment, a punishment worse than death according to Romeo. Eventually, just as everything comes to an end, so do the lives of Romeo and poor Juliet. The main people who can be held responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet are Lord Capulet, Friar Laurence and Romeo. To begin with, one person in this play who is responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet is Lord Capulet. One of the major things he did that completely ruined their chances was to arrange Juliette and Paris' wedding without Juliette's consent. If he had thought about what she had wanted, perhaps she and Romeo could have gotten married without having to worry about the problems that would result. Lord Capulet also moved up the wedding date, which upset Romeo, making his "death" and the wedding even earlier than planned and making it impossible for Romeo to remove Juliet from the tomb before she wakes from her coma of 42 hours. . In the play, Capulet says: "Mistress, your servant/ Thank you, no thanks, nor proud of me, no proud/ but strengthen your fair joints against next Thursday/ To go with Paris to St. Peter's Church/ Or I will drag you on a rack there. ยป(III.v. 170-174). This quote shows Lord Capulet's opposition to Juliet's desire and his inability to understand the desires of others rather than the wishes of oneself. To continue, a second character in this play is responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet..... . middle of paper......his quote shows what happens when he finds Juliet when she wakes up in the tomb. All of this and more would never have happened if he had thought through all the possible options when he had the choice to marry them. In conclusion, throughout the play of Romeo and Juliet, a chain of tragic events caused by three unlikely people ends the lives of both. main characters, Romeo and Juliet. Although Friar Laurence is only out for the greater good, he could have simply refused to marry Romeo and Juliet in private and told them it would be smarter to do so in public. If Lord Capulet had thought about what his daughter wanted, she might have been willing to marry in public rather than without an official wedding. And if Romeo had thought more rationally rather than on impulse, perhaps he and Juliet would have survived all these tragic events..
