Essay / Fifty Shades of Skin Color - 1996
Clippers owner Donald Sterling was caught in classic racism. His personal assistant/girlfriend recorded him in his own house during a fight they were having. Sterling noted that she couldn't bring a black person to one of her basketball games, even though she is African-Mexican-American herself. Racism still exists today and will continue to exist if people like Mr. Sterling do not understand that it is wrong to view another man or woman as an inferior human being because of the color of their skin. Donald says, “People feel certain things. Hispanics feel certain things about black people. Black people feel certain things about other groups. It has been that way historically, and it will always be that way” (TMZ Sports). In Toni Morrison's novel The Bluest Eye, she writes about how the black community felt toward white people in Lorain, Ohio. Racism itself has its own horrible effects, but when people of the same skin color start turning their backs on each other and discriminating against their own people, it is worse than typical racism between blacks and whites. However, when parents resent their own children because of the racial genes they passed on, the effects are far more destructive than simple white oppression. Aunt Jimmy was Cholly Breedlove's adoptive mother. His birth mother, Jimmy's niece, thought she could just throw away baby Cholly. When Jimmy saw this, she went out and picked up the newborn Cholly from the garbage pile and saved her life. She was always openly honest with Cholly and she told him the truth when he questioned the truth about his real father and mother. "He wasn't anywhere when you were born." Your mom...... middle of paper...... has diminished over the years. It may be more subtle and occur more in private places, such as at Mr. Sterling's home, but it is still present today. The fact is that black people will fight racism if it comes from white people, but on the other hand, if it comes to lighter skin of the black race, they will sit back and watch it torture them from the inside . Claudia, Frieda and Cholly did not have a perfect childhood, but a semi-normal one, where they were able to grow up and live ordinary lives. Unfortunately, Junior and Pecola suffered mentally from their lack of whiteness and were punished by their unloving and unforgiving mothers. Works Cited Morrison, Toni. The bluest eye.
