  • Essay / Child Sexual Abuse and Resilience - 1029

Research Paper Child Sexual Abuse and ResilienceThe lasting effects of childhood sexual abuse into adulthood can be debilitating if resilience is possible . I chose this topic because it is of great interest to me, as I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. When I began my research, I had preconceived ideas about what would be found. Long-lasting effects can be low self-esteem, sexual promiscuity, sexual problems, attachment issues, withdrawal from abuse, PTSD, grieving a lost childhood, and feeling like you always want to control situations. Additionally, I expected some to suffer from nightmares, eating disorders, poor school performance, OCD issues, feelings of inferiority and inadequacy, and parental rejection. To borrow a phrase from Friedrich Nietzsche, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger” (Nietzsche, 2001-2011 ©), I believe that with a proper support system of family, friends and guidance, resilience can and will prevail. During the research, it was appalling to discover additional side effects of childhood sexual abuse, in the form of anxiety, depression, feeling like they could have prevented the abuse, and suicidal thoughts. Other effects include anxiety and sexual disorders, including too many sexual partners, prostitution, and poor parenting skills later in life. Children may have difficulty establishing safe boundaries with others (for example, saying no to others) and have relationship problems, poor body image, eating problems, unhealthy behaviors, such as drinking, drugs and self-harm. These behaviors are often displayed in an attempt to hide the painful emotions related to the abuse. Go back and make sure it's a complete clearance! (Child Welfare Information gateway, 2008).
