Age gap is a major concern in the workplace. Over time, the new generation develops a huge barrier compared to older generations, which also explicitly affects age gap challenges in the workplace. Today, “more and more older workers are considering postponing their retirement due to the economic downturn.” (Doyle, Age Discrimination). As older workers delay their retirement, employers are more concerned. There are a myriad of challenges that employers and employees face in the job market, such as loyalty, lack of experience, ego, etc. Age differences affect employers because older workers are perceived to be loyal to businesses and large corporations, while younger workers are more likely to do so. look for better opportunities. After being in the workforce for several years, mature workers become more comfortable with their jobs as they settle into stable employment. Once comfort is acquired, mature workers would hardly leave their workplace unless experiencing a rare inconvenience. On the other hand, young workers are always looking for better opportunities in the job market to gain as much experience and knowledge from low-end companies in order to move up the ladder in the hope of gaining access to high-end professions. So, the age gap between workers in a workplace can make a company suffer as it usually encounters both older and younger workers. Young workers in their 20s face discrimination based on ageism. Many often mention that they have proven themselves unqualified or unsuitable for career growth and advancement because their appearance is perceived as far too young or inexperienced. Therefore, employers are likely to hire older workers with experienced backgrounds. Large businesses and corporations are looking...... middle of paper...... other team players in the workplace. They also feel like they aren't making mistakes and that younger workers don't have the experience to dominate the workforce. Similarly, younger workers have become imbued with an ego thinking that older workers will leave their jobs in the coming years and that older workers are overwhelmed by their education.
