    Homosexuals have faced many trials and tribulations in their quest to live normal, happy lives. There are many controversial events and topics that pose obstacles to complete happiness. Although these barriers are in place, members of the LGBT subculture seem to make the best of every situation. Fighting for their rights and changing laws to protect them paves the way for a better future. Hoping to return to a normal life, many same-sex couples want to start a family and for some, the only option is adoption. Well, same-sex adoption is not legal in most countries, making this dream impossible for some. This has sparked controversy among same-sex couples and the general public who believe same-sex adoption should remain illegal. Ultimately, same-sex adoption should be legal. The controversy surrounding same-sex marriage is one of the many results of the slow process of legalization of same-sex marriage in various states of the United States of America. The fight for same-sex marriage goes back a long way to the Stonewall Riots of 1969 (“The Stonewall Riot”). Along with various events that occurred in the meantime, government officials began to understand that homosexuals had the right to marry their life partner. In 2012, same-sex marriage became legal in three states (“Same-sex Marriage in the United States”). This was the start of a very significant change in the LGBT subculture. To date, there are a total of 14 states where same-sex marriages are legal (“New Jersey becomes 14th state to legalize same-sex marriage”). This represents 14 out of 50 states where same-sex marriage is legal and other states are eagerly waiting to approve the bill allowing same-sex marriages (Garcia).
