  • Essay / Russian Foreign Policy Paper - 3008

Russia's actions in foreign and European affairs over the next 10-20 years will change the world comprehensively. The European Community's contempt for Russia will lead it to find new allies abroad. Russia will ally itself with two of the world's emerging superpowers. These will be China and India, the two most populous countries in the world. This three-way alliance will dominate world affairs because of Russia's technological and political leadership and the willingness of India and China to enter into military and economic agreements with Russia. Russia will not choose to ally with these countries, but it will also be forced to do so by the European Community and NATO's treatment of its defeated nation. The European Community's lack of respect for Russia in foreign affairs will be the driving force that pushes Russia into allying with its Eurasian neighbors. Due to the EU's eastward enlargement, Russia is forced to look east for expansion and opportunities, as it faces significantly diminishing influence in Europe. The former foreign policy minister of Russia notes in his book that "Europe's potential for solving the problems of the modern world is underutilized" and believes that siding with Asia and the Middle -East might be the smarter solution, as these countries "have demonstrated a much higher level of political unity and harmony in key areas." This shows that Russia's views do not match those of the European Union and are more interested in establishing political relations with Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The latest Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, revealed that Russia "does not aspire to become a member of the EU, but we are ready to cooperate in the areas of economy and external security" (the Russia does not aspire to...... in the middle of paper ......ffairs%20%28Moscow%29&atitle=New%20vistas%20of%20Russia%2DIndia%20cooperation# (Accessed October 23, 2005)Porte entry to Russia “Russia does not aspire to join the EU” http://. www.gateway2russia.com/st/art_255828.php (Accessed October 15, 2005) Cohen, Ariel “War Games: Russia, China Grow Alliance,” Heritage Foundation (September 2005), http://www.heritage.org /Press/Commentary/ed092605a.cfm (accessed October 13, 2005).
