  • Essay / An open letter to Roderick Nash on island civilization

A man named Robert Laughlin once said: "The Earth is very old and has suffered greatly: volcanic explosions, floods, meteor strikes, mountain formation and all kinds of other abuses. greater than anything people could inflict. Yet the Earth is still there. Laughlin clearly believes in this quote that the Earth can take care of itself. The Earth has experienced disasters much more serious than simple pollution and the extinction of species and plants. Roderick Nash, environmentalist and activist, says the opposite. In Nash he published an essay, Island Civilization: A Vision For Human Occupancy of Earth in the Fourth Millennium, which clearly shows his negative view of humanity. It discusses the history between humans and nature and how humans have been biased against nature. He elaborates by explaining how when people explore the world, they destroy it in one way or another. Nash also discusses other traits that humans possess that should be considered useful and great. Nash particularly despises human beings. He evokes scenarios that would benefit the planet. He emphasizes his vision, island civilization. It also evokes other scenarios such as the garden, the primitive future and the wasteland. Nash constantly blames humans for nature's destruction and Earth's injuries, this may be true, but Nash underestimates Earth's self-healing abilities. Humans can't be the only thing hurting the Earth. When you really think about it, Earth is going through many natural disasters that cannot be controlled. According to activist Tim Haering, “tsunamis, floods, volcanoes, earthquakes, tornadoes, forest fires, diseases, nature kills more than we kill each other.” Earth adds all these natural elements...... middle of paper...... to get along with all the different opinions, beliefs, religions, etc. Nash has little to no logic with his storyline. He does not consider human nature. If humans didn't kill each other first, then disease would eventually arise and kill the species. The Earth will outlive us all and when the human species eventually becomes extinct, the Earth will still be there to repair itself from the damage we have caused, and still carry on. with natural disasters. I admit that we are polluting the planet, but there will always be some kind of life on Earth, even if humans aren't. People shouldn't worry too much about the destruction of the planet, because it will heal itself. If people start polluting it too much, the Earth will kill us. Roderick Nash, like many others, underestimates the power of the Earth. He can take care of himself as he has for over a billion years..
