  • Essay / The Evolution of Spirituality - 643

Carmela TayagWilliam RamseyTA: John AndersMarch 3, 2014Phil 101-1001: First AssignmentIn this essay I will discuss the spiritual evolution of humanity. For humanity to evolve spiritually, it must move from a lower state to a higher state. First, I will defend my conclusion by providing the reasons that support it. I will defend them, develop them and explain what I mean. Before delving further into my claims, I will first clarify critical terminology such as “moral evil” and “natural evil.” Finally, I will address some objections to each of my assertions. First, for humans to evolve spiritually, they must move from a lower outlook to a higher state. Second, for humanity to evolve spiritually, there must be a state of interiority. Third, a lower state includes a period when there is both moral and natural evil. Fourth, for humanity to evolve spiritually, there must be a time when both moral and natural evil will exist. Before going into detail, I will define a few terms. Moral harm is the type of harm caused by intentional action or inaction in some cases. They include, but are not limited to, lying, murder, theft and other injustices. Natural evil can be defined as evil that results from the consequences of nature, such as diseases, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. Substandard is a lower quality condition and a lesser, poorer version of something. A higher state is a state of better quality and improvement. In this case, the higher state is the result of spiritual evolution and the development of virtues to achieve a more enlightened state. For humans to evolve spiritually, they must have a starting point and an ending point. Between these two points, humans must go through a period that will evoke... middle of paper ...... your concern for others leading to spiritual development. Some will say that it would be much simpler if there was no need to develop virtues and live in a world where there are no morals to apply. But without moral evil in action, one cannot develop a full understanding of characteristics such as compassion and sympathy. Even if there is natural evil, it does not always result in the same degree of certain virtues. Without confronting and living with moral and natural evils, humanity cannot truly evolve spiritually, thereby moving to a more higher state. Without an age where both moral and natural evil exist, humanity would not evolve spiritually. Humanity would simply remain in a neutral state, without vices or virtues. In this neutral state there would be no need to evolve as there is nothing to grow from spiritually..
