Since the dawn of time, society has been fighting against the causes of addiction. Drug addiction has desecrated the health of the nation and stained that of future generations. The hostile impact on younger generations of cigarette addiction is staggering. Smoking takes a toll on the minds and health of young adolescents around the world. Teen smoking is an epidemic that stems from several causes. Nowadays, smoking among young adolescents has become more common. Smoking among young adolescents is most often caused by peer pressure. According to a Teenage Smoking article, “At no other time in life is peer pressure greater than during adolescence. Teenagers want to fit in and be cool, even at the cost of their health. It’s hard to get many teenagers to quit smoking if everyone is doing it” (Hamilton 2). Many concerned parents of teenagers want to prevent their children from smoking. According to an article by Maureen Hamilton, “Before we can stop teenagers from smoking, we need to understand why they started smoking in the first place. Is this a great advertisement for tobacco? Stress? Friends or relatives” (Hamilton 1). There are many reasons why teens experiment with tobacco products, but peer pressure has been found to be the leading cause of addiction. A handful of teenagers experience the influence of peer pressure every day, but the causes of smoking can stem from several factors such as stress, family influences and curiosity. Teenagers make it almost impossible to live above the influence, especially when trying to fit in with the crowd. Many children start smoking because they are pressured to try.
